SOUTH ST. BURGER Co. OPENS FIRST ALBERTA LOCATION IN CALGARY’S CROSSIRON MILLS

TORONTO – August 24, 2009…. Celebrating a major milestone in the history of the company, South St. Burger Co., a New York Fries company, has opened its first franchised location in Calgary’s CrossIron Mills today. The CrossIron Mills location is the burger chain’s 10th restaurant, the first store outside of Ontario and its first mall location.

“This is an exciting time for South St. Burger Co. as we grow our concept beyond Ontario,” comments Jay Gould, president of South St. Burger Co. and New York Fries. “We are celebrating many firsts with the opening of the CrossIron Mills location – including our first franchised and first mall location – but we truly believe that the brand is well poised to expand into new markets like Alberta with a franchising strategy, now that we have perfected our concept.”

The first South St. Burger Co. franchise in Calgary is owned and operated by Nick and Brian deHaan, who have successfully owned and operated New York Fries stores in Alberta for almost 24 years under the corporation Junior Foods Services Limited.

“Calgary is a perfect market for this restaurant,” confirms Nick deHaan, franchisee. “Calgarians are burger connoisseurs and really appreciate premium quality food.  We are really excited to introduce our New York Fries customers to South St. Burger Co. and are proud to be the first South St. Burger Co. franchisee in Calgary. We look forward to growing the South St. brand throughout the community and bringing more locations to our burger-loving city.”

All items on South St. Burger Co.’s menu are designed to be “best in class.” The menu features: 1/3 lb burgers made with fresh patties and 100 per cent pure, hormone and antibiotic-free, naturally raised beef from Calgary’s own Spring Creek Ranch; small burgers (same burgers, half the size); grilled chicken breasts; and veggie burgers.  Sides include fresh-cut New York Fries and poutine, onion rings and real, hand-scooped ice cream milkshakes. The onion rings, like the fries, are fresh-cut in the restaurant, and are cooked in non-hydrogenated, trans fat free sunflower oil.

At South St. Burger Co., customers can top off their burger with more than 25 traditional and exotic condiment choices, including Dijon horseradish, wasabi mayo, mango chutney, guacamole and others at no extra charge.  A selection of real cheese, including cheddar, Swiss, goat and Monterey Jack with jalapeno, are also on the menu.

The quick service restaurant occupies 2,175 square feet and is situated beside the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World . The design was created by Jump Branding and Design in Toronto (www.howhigh.ca) and the restaurant seats 75 people.

South St. Burger Co. is open from 10:00 am - 9:00 pm, Monday – Saturday and 11:00 am7:00 pm on Sunday, with free on-site parking.  The company’s other locations are corporately owned and include North York, Mississauga, Toronto (2), Newmarket, Etobicoke, Aurora, Barrie and Burlington.  In addition to Calgary, South St. Burger Co. will open two more locations in the fall of 2009 in Ajax and Markham.

New Yonge and Eglinton location gets a great review from Yelper

August 24th, 2009

Thanks to Chrissy for the great YELP review of South St. Burger Co.’s Yonge and Eglinton location. Read the review here:

“I live in the Yonge/Davisville area and before South St. Burger Co opened up, I didn’t know of any really good burger places to go to. I’d always pass the restaurant during construction and what initially caught my attention was the New York Fries sign (the fries here make me weak in the knees!).

The place opened about a month ago and everything about it is great. The staff is super friendly…I’ve been there twice since they’ve opened and already they remember my face. The restaurant itself is bright, clean and modern with mini booths to sit in and a garage door that opens up to Yonge street for those hot summer nights. The location is great, too. It’s super easy to get to by either subway or car and is just a block north of the Yonge-Eglinton theatres in case you want to grab a quick bite to eat before your movie.

And now on to what’s most important…the food! Don’t let the size of the burgers deceive you…they may not be the biggest ones you’ve seen, but the patties are thick and are guaranteed to fill you up. The first time I went, I ordered a kids meal and when I saw the size of the burger I thought I made a mistake… but I was surprised to find that even their tiny kids burger filled me up like a steak dinner!

If a thick burger and New York Fries still doesn’t have you sold, you might be happy to know that you can choose between white or whole wheat buns, 4 different cheeses, and an array of spreads…all in addition to your usual topping choices.

South St. Burger Co is definitely my new neighbourhood fave!”
