The driving philosophy for South St. Burger Co., has always been to “Be the Right Choice”. This statement applies to all facets of our quick service restaurant business, including our ingredient selection (naturally raised, hormone + antibiotic free beef, “non-pumped” chicken breasts, fresh Grade A potatoes, hand-made onion rings and premium ice cream for our shakes etc…), supplier selection (supporting local Canadian farmers with smaller operations instead defaulting to factory farming methods which are common in the fast food industry), food preparation (flame grilled burgers, trans fat free sunflower oil for cooking our fries and rings), customer experience and corporate responsibility. It is in keeping with our brand that South St. Burger Co. is extremely community and environmentally focused, and in developing our stores and products, finding sustainable and energy efficient solutions is part of our mandate. To date, we have made great headway in the areas of sustainability. When we build our new stores, we implement a heat exchange hood systems that cleans and recycles the heat generated from the grill to heat our restaurants, sink and light sensors in our bathrooms save electricity and water, LED light fixtures inside and outside our stores, etc… all with the common practice that as we are introduced to “greener” technologies, we will include them in the design of our upcoming stores.
Recently however, we decided to go back and renovate two of our existing locations. Both our Barrie and Markham stores are unique to the chain, as they are “stand alone” buildings. This structure provides us with more flexibility to implement and benefit from sustainable renewable energy technologies. In our Barrie store, we just installed solar panels to help us heat our water. In February we will be installing an electrical solar panel at our Markham location to help offset our energy consumption. These improvements to our stores represent our commitment to exploring alternative ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Operating as “green” as possible is part of being the right choice, and we hope to “raise the bar” in an industry that is often slower to adopt sustainable technology.
